Historic: Modi Becomes First Indian PM to Visit Ukraine in 30 Years
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced a significant two-nation state visit, beginning in Poland and followed by Ukraine. The visit underscores India’s strengthening ties with Central Europe and marks a historic diplomatic engagement with Ukraine.
Visit to Poland: August 21-22
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that PM Modi will first visit Poland from August 21 to 22. In his departure statement, Modi emphasized the deepening relations between India and Poland, particularly as the two nations celebrate 70 years of diplomatic ties. “Poland is a crucial economic partner in Central Europe, and our shared commitment to democracy and pluralism further solidifies our bond. I look forward to engaging with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda to elevate our partnership,” Modi stated.
During his time in Warsaw, Modi is scheduled to address the Indian diaspora on Wednesday evening. According to Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi will hold meetings with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda, and will also interact with business leaders and environmentalists. The visit is notable as Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Poland in 45 years, following Morarji Desai.
Historic Visit to Ukraine: August 23
Following his visit to Poland, PM Modi will travel to Ukraine on August 23 at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This visit marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine since the establishment of diplomatic relations 30 years ago. Modi’s visit occurs amidst Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia and its recent military offensives.
I will be visiting Ukraine at the invitation of President @ZelenskyyUa. This visit will be an opportunity to build on the earlier discussions with him and deepening the India-Ukraine friendship. We will also share perspectives on the peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine…
